LINGUISTICS TERMINOLOGY
Linguistics is the scientific study of language.
Lexicology is the part of linguistics that studies words. This may include their nature and function as symbols and their meaning.
Morphology - the study of the formation of words.
Phonetics - the study of speech sounds in their physical aspects.
Phonology - the study of speech sounds in their cognitive aspects.
Semantics is the linguistic study of meaning and the relationship between signifiers (words, phrases, signs and symbols).
LANGUAGE TERMINOLOGY
Language is a system that consists of the development, acquisition, maintenance and use of complex systems of communication.
Language Family Is a group of languages that descend from a common ancestor.
Grammar is a system of rules which governs the production and usage in a given language.
Philiology is the study of a language's grammar, history, and literary tradition.
Phonetics is the study of speech and non-speech sounds, and their acoustics.
Syntax is the study of the construction of sentences in a language. The formation and composition of phrases and sentences.
Toponymy is the study of place names, their origins, meanings, use, and typology.
Typology is the classification of languages according to their linguistic trait.
WORD TERMINOLOGY
Words are the smallest elements that can be used in insulation with objective and practical meaning. Words are thought of as the smallest meaningful unit of speech that can stand by themselves.
Word classes are the parts of speech. These include nouns, determiners, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.
Word roots are words that do not have a prefix in front of the word or a suffix at the end of the word. The root word is the primary unit of a word and of a word family. It carries the semantic content and can’t be reduced.
Antonym is a word opposite in meaning to another.
Derivation is a word that comes from another language.
Semantics is the study of a word’s meaning
Synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.
Terminology is the body of terms used with a particular technical application in a subject of study, profession, etc.
