Opinions Are Weapons of our Own Design
The more energy we devote to processing our thoughts we put into a perception fast it starts to mingle with our beliefs, instincts and feelings. and then we find ourselves with forming an opinion.
Opinions are subjective collections of different variables. These variables are what define us as individuals and they are culmination of our knowledge, intellectual capabilities, life experiences, relationships, emotional capacity, religious beliefs, cultural traditions, sexual identity, political ideology, personal tragedies, talents, or childhood trauma.
Next add your genetic and behavioral traits like temperament, character, morality, honesty, empathy, compassion, understanding or integrity to the pot. The last final variable to throw in the mix is related to our mental state, mental health, psychological capacity and any diagnosed disorders that influence our thought processes, emotions, and cognitive functioning.
So your opinion on something is heavily influenced by factors outside the actual topic. The essence of your humanity is present in all your opinions and because of that we all believe our opinions to be real and that’s where the line is blurred between opinion and truth. We believe our opinions are true so any contrary opinions are false. We are right and others are wrong.
So what is the point of this narrative in how opinions form? The problem is not right or wrong, true or false, or good or bad. The problem is in the way we use our opinions negatively to influence, hurt, defame, judge, belittle, demean, or harm other people in order to prove ourselves right.
Social media is a platform for the dissemination of opinion to a mass audience of people who will read it and be affected in some way by what we choose to post. Set aside the positive use of opinion that benefits others and think instead of the negative behavior people engage in when they debate topics online. There are some vile, ugly and cruel words thrown around on the Internet without care or concern for other people. Toxic interactions lead to hate speech, discrimination, bullying, harassment, stalking, and verbal abuse. It’s no longer about having an opinion when it becomes more about forcing on opinion on others. Anonymity allows this practice to overshadow the actual topic and the content of a debate. The debate is nullified when the people are doing nothing but spewing hate at each other for thinking differently. Instead of an intellectual exchange between adults it becomes a playground full of bullies.
In a progressive world how have we lost civility so easily that even the nicest person will fight dirty just to be the one who is right? Just to be the one who wins no matter the cost? How can we evolve when our behavior is no different than an animal stalking it’s prey?
Now our opinions are real but only to us. Nobody else has the same definition of variables so while they may share similar thought on a topic it won’t be the exact thought as yours.
And then the line between opinion and truth blurs until we are convinced our opinion is real and we decide we are right and everyone who thinks differently is wrong. This is where the arguments and the vitriol and ugliness come into play when you post online about it.
Opinions can be weapons of our own design. Tread lightly.
