I have been working on a book on neuroscience that is an easy way to understand the power of your brain, your mind and the thoughts that drive your creativity, insight and intelligence. The most powerful fact about the brain is the concept of neuroplasticity or the brain’s ability to change structurally to grow, evolve and increase it’s capabilities. We do this with cognitive training and surprisingly, mindfulness meditation. The brain can also heal from trauma as seen with the comparison of brain scans done on combat war veterans suffering from PTSD. Neuroscience is a remarkable wonder that we haven’t even truly begun to comprehend.

Self-care is an activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Good self-care is key to helping you heal from trauma, improve your mood, reduce anxiety, and to diminish the intensity of intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and nightmares.
Good self care for PTSD anxiety means engaging in activities that lower the physiological adrenal surge from any trauma. It can literally be life-saving. When survivors are able to reprocess and release the trauma(s) recovery and healing become possible. In addition to helping with physical recovery from trauma, self-care also helps survivors integrate the spiritual, physical, social, and emotional pieces of healing.
Self-care isn’t a selfish act. It is not only about considering our needs; it is about knowing what we need to do in order to take care of ourselves. We need to care for ourselves by actively participating in positive healing methods like self care, professional therapy, medication management, overall healthcare, exercise, sleep habits, addiction treatment and meditative and relaxation processes.

Where do you start?
- Stick to the basics. Over time you will find your own rhythm and routine. You will be able to implement more and identify more particular forms of self-care that work for you.
- Self-care needs to be something you actively plan instead of something that just happens. It is an active choice and you must treat it as such.
Tips for Your Plan
- Create a “no” list, with things you know you don’t like or you no longer want to do.
- Get enough sleep. Implement a safe sleep environment so you can achieve peaceful rest.
- Exercise. In contrast to what many people think, exercise is as good for our emotional health as it is for our physical health. It increases serotonin levels, leading to improved mood and energy.
- Follow-up with medical care. Keep therapy appointments and actively participate in your treatment plan. Tell them the truth, be open with them about what’s going on inside your head. It
- Use relaxation exercises and/or practice meditation. You can do these exercises at any time of the day.
- Spend enough time with your loved ones.
- Do at least one relaxing activity every day, whether it’s taking a walk or spending 30 minutes unwinding.
- Do at least one pleasurable activity every day.
