Kairos is my pen name. It gets shortened to Kai. Let me explain the meaning according to several philosophies and my personal experience with it.
Kairos (καιρός) is an Ancient Greek word meaning the time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action; the perfect opportune and decisive moment. From the Greek meaning literally ‘opportunity’.
It is not enough to be in the right place at the right time. You should also have an open mind at the right time.
The Concept of Time
The ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos (χρόνος) and kairos. Chronos means chronological or sequential literal time. Kairos signifies an opportune time for action. Chronos is quantitative and Kairos is a qualitative, permanent nature.
Philosophies
The etymological origins of Kairos is traced back to the Ancient Greek association with archery. In the sport kairos denotes the moment in which an arrow may be fired with sufficient force to penetrate a target.
Aristotle defined it as the time and space context in which the proof will be delivered.
Modern rhetoric dictates that “what is said must be said at the right time. It is is opportune, spontaneous, or timely." And it encourages creativity, which is necessary to adapt to unforeseen obstacles and opinions that can alter the opportune or appropriate moment.
Kairos" (used 86 times in the New Testament) refers to an opportune time, a "moment" or a "season" such as "harvest time.”
In Greek mythology, Kairos, the youngest child of Zeus, was the god of opportunity. According to Diogenes, the philosopher Protagoras was the first to expound the importance of the "right moment" in classical rhetoric. (Richard Nordqvist
My Personal Experience
My Kairos moment came last summer when I became single after twenty years of marriage to two husbands. When my separation occurred I made significant changes in my life that have improved my quality of life. I was promoted and I moved into my own home. The opportune time for action and change happened when I was emotionally and mentally ready for it. Everything fell into place because the kairos moment was the perfect time in my life to make these changes.
Have you ever experienced a kairos moment?
