What is Etymology?
The etymologist finds the deadest words to have been once a brilliant picture. Language is fossil poetry.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Etymology (et· y· mol· o· gy) was defined in the 14th century; from the Middle English ‘ethimologie’ from Anglo-French, from Latin ‘etymologia’ from Greek, from etymon + -logia -logy.
Etymology is the history of a word shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another, by analyzing it into its component parts, by identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral language.
Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2,000 years ago.
Etymologists use texts, and texts about the language, to determine how a word was used during earlier periods and when they were defined in language. They analyze related languages with the comparative method and then make inferences about shared parent language and vocabulary. Sanskrit linguists of Ancient India were the first to study linguistics and etymology.
The development of language is part of the development of the personality, for words are the natural means of expressing thoughts and establishing understanding between people. - Maria Montessori
